WICHE

There are a total of 27 veterinary schools in the United States, each school setting it’s own admission requirements. MSU students are encouraged to meet frequently with their Preveterinary advisor to keep abreast of the changes that may occur in admission requirements.
Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges

The Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education, was designed in 1953 to serve the professional needs of the residents of the western region. Through programs such as the PSEP, Professional Student Exchange Program, it provides affordable access to professions not currently available in certain states of the western region. Professional programs not available in Montana include veterinary medicine, medicine, podiatry, osteopathic medicine, optometry, occupational therapy and public health. Each state appropriates funding for a certain number of residents in exchange for in-state tuition costs, a guaranteed number of slots in each entering class and an increase in the professional work force returning to Montana. This support fee is analogous to the subsidy provided by the state for residents in the Montana University System. The WICHE commission sets the support fee for each program that the participating state pays into the program.

The number of students accepted is dependant upon the number of slots the Montana legislature allows in the Commissioner for Higher Education's budget, the number of Montana WICHE slots the veterinary schools set aside, and the number of qualified applicants there are each year. In 1993 the Montana legislature cut funding for the veterinary WICHE support fees down from ten students to five. The five positions were held in place until 1997. In 1997 the Commissioner for Higher Education requested and received an increase of this number to 7 students per year for veterinary medicine. The Commissioner for Higher Education increased the number of students supported to 9 for the years 2001 and 2002.
